Why are you doing what you do? What inspired you to help people?
Your WHY is a great pitch technique. Journalist are always on the look out for great stories. Sharing what you do and why you do it is a great way to get attention. You may not want to hear this but generally speaking journalists are not all that interested in your business. What they are interested in is interesting stories about why you do what you do. When people know the back story of what lead you to do what you’re doing, they will better connect with you. Think about your origin story. Were you inspired to start your business after hearing about the struggles of people? Did you experience something in your own life that inspried you start your business? Sharing your why, especially if it is unique, moving or inspirational, is a great way to get the media’s attention.
Your Why
First ask yourself these simple questions:
- Why do you do what you do?
- How are you different?
- Why do you matter?
- How do others benefit?
- Why should a journalist tell your story?
Think about the basics of every journalistic story… who, what, where, when, why and how
Think Local
This is a story to pitch to your local media. Local media loves to feature people and businesses in the community. So get focused on why you are in service to your customers. What inspired you to do what you are doing.
Remember, it is always about the story for journalists. Hook them with a great story and they will almost always bite. Pitch them a story about WHY you do what you do rather than your business directly you will stand out from the crowd.
