Media Monday Tip: Get Creative

Getting the attention of the media takes work, strategy and persistence. You need to have a good plan when you are reaching out to the media to get featured. It is a noisy place these days. Journalists are busy people, they get hundreds of emails, including press releases and pitches a day. So how do you stand out from the crowd?

Get Creative

A key component of your media plan should involve getting creative. You need to start thinking creatively about how you can pitch a story or idea to a producer or reporter. Be sure to watch the broadcast you are pitching to see how they present stories or segments on the air. What are the most popular segments? What segments resonate most with you? Make sure you are pitching stories that fit with the producer/reporter/show! Think outside the box. Don’t just send a press release, help that producer craft the segment. Think about what products you might bring to show and tell or what graphics/boards you could help them create (maybe a top tip list?).

Use your creativity to stand out from the crowd.

Think about your pitch in terms of the on-air product. How can you get engaging, entertaining and informative? Bring energy to your pitch by telling a story. Tell the story of why you do what you do – share your why. Or maybe tell the story of how you can help the audience live better lives, have more fun, be happier, be healthier; whatever it is you help your customers and clients do,  or problem you help them solve, you also want to do that for the media’s audience. Help that producer or reporter visualize the story you are pitching. Use the passion you have for your business to illustrate/show how you can best serve the journalist and their audience.

Remember it is not about you, it is all about how you can best serve the audience.
